Occasionally we experience the profundity of our work in a simple and tender gesture. In this situation, it was an insisted hug from a long time client when he was leaving the office. Rich met with him for an important meeting to discuss his estate planning, plans for remarriage, upcoming dream vacation and deteriorating health. The relevant topics were held by the undercurrent of his comment, “I just wish I knew when I was going to die.”
Two days later, he suffered a stroke. Three days after his stroke, he died in the presence of all of his beloved family.
James (not his real name), insisted on hugging Rich before he departed the office. It was as if he knew it might be the last time. For seventeen years we worked together … we had the extreme privilege of guiding him through many life turns, transitions, obstacles and successes.
As a MIT educated engineer, his meticulous spreadsheets illuminating his tax data and various analysis rivaled our sophisticated software. He traveled the world, offered his expertise wholeheartedly working well into retirement and fulfilled a family tradition of taking his children with him on annual cruises. His was a life well-lived and we were privileged to be an integral part of his journey.
