I remember in the 1970s, many Latin American governments seemed not to really function. Their governments would provide enough money for the country to operate for a few weeks or months and then the country would be on the brink of disaster. I remember thinking how lucky I was to live in the United States where our government knew how to function.
Lately, it seems that our government lurches from one avoidable crisis to another. We fund just enough money to harm the economy and then the President and Congress cobble enough votes to run the government for a few more months. Just as our economy seems to recover we repeat the process again costing tens of billions of dollars to the economy and millions of jobs!
So, have we become a banana republic?
