In life there are three things that are important concerning wealth accumulation, spending, earning and expectations. This blog has to do with spending. Most people assume that very few things are negotiable but these items are always worth trying to negotiate.
Anything dealing with housing: (buying a house, renting a house, furniture purchases, carpets and rugs, and most repairs or maintenance) Even phone and cable are negotiable (electric and gas are not as they are regulated utilities) but if you use oil it can be negotiated.
Transportation: Buying a car, motorcycle, bicycle they are all negotiable. Especially buying a car where the prices suggested by manufacturers are designed for negotiation. Not trying to negotiate for a car purchase or rental is asking to be taken.
Medical bills: The industry is always negotiating amongst themselves so there is a great deal of flexibility to negotiate with the care giver and the vast majority of the time the provider has no idea who has negotiated a price and who has not.
Credit Card interest rates and user points (mileage) If you’re in good standing with your credit card, you have plenty of negotiating power. You can negotiate for everything from lower credit card rates to waived annual fees to a higher credit limit. If you do not have good credit, credit card companies can help you come up with a payment plan if you can’t afford the minimum payments. You just need to ask.
Insurance: As with credit card companies, if you’re in good with your insurance company, you may be able to negotiate for better rates. At minimum, you should ask about bundling your insurance policies to see how much that could save you. And if you notice your insurance company is running a new promotional deal that you’re not in on, ask about it. The company may sign you up just for asking.
If it is second hand, assume you can negotiate the price.
All of these are examples of things that are negotiable and you should take advantage of them because you are paying extra when you do not!
