In May my current driver’s license expires, not much of a news story. However, it points to the new reality of our online world and our need to be mindful of renewals that used to be triggered from an outside source. My “aha” happened to me this month. Going through the security line during recent travel, the TSA official mentioned that my driver’s license was set to expire in about a month. Since this happens every five years, I do not think about it; I wait for the renewal notice. I have no idea when this current rule took place, it could be 2014 or sometime earlier, but the effect of the rule is that renewal notices are not sent out; we are now expected to track renewals ourselves. Fortunately for me, my wife said to check online; sure enough, Massachusetts no longer provides notices. Not only are we tracking our license renewals, we track our entire deposit transaction at ATMs and our Social Security history online. This tracking trend will continue. If the agent not said anything, my license may have expired. The question to ponder: Are you tracking all of the situations you expected to track? Do you even know what they are?
