This week of Thanksgiving we offer a few practices that reflect a new view on the phrase “Making a Difference.” What about Being a Difference? The path to “Being a Difference” is very simple and begins with a regular practice of Thanksgiving Behavior. Yes, studies reflect that our well-being (health, joy, connections) expands with these simple practices. Consider this week of Thanksgiving to commit to these actions – as a practice for life:
Expressing Gratitude can be a formal practice such as writing a daily gratitude journal and handwritten thank you notes, an ordinary practice of saying thank you, to every action in between. Expressing gratitude is recognition of the many blessings of this life, including the kindness of others, however significant or modest. Expressing gratitude is the opening to well-being.
Asking For Help at first blush may not seem like a Thanksgiving Behavior, yet it is a clear way of knowing, by heart, that you are connected to situations far greater than self. And, we all need help in myriad ways. Asking for help is a humble move that bestows confidence and connection on the receiver. The practice is direct feedback that we matter, the other matters and what we are doing together makes a difference. Asking for help ignites the energy of well-being.
Giving Generously is a clear demonstration of gratitude. The act of sharing with others means we see others in situations that call for help. Our hearts are open, we know that help is a constant feedback loop of energy and we give just as we receive. If you are inspired to give and would like a suggestion, the favorite charities of Colman Knight members are, in no particular order: Pan Mass Challenge, EDWON (Empower Dalit Women of Nepal), Northeastern University, Charity Water, Trees for Life, Make a Wish Foundation, Special Olympics, Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, Brain Aneurysm Foundation, Free Tibet, and Pointing Out the Great Way
Giving generously is the manifestation of well-being. Being a difference is the embodiment of these practices when they are actively integrated and manifested in you.
